Becoming – a poem

They told me I should be the rock,
Unyielding, hard and cold.
But I longed for the sea,
Caressing and inviting.

They told me I should be the sun,
Bright, shining with illumination.
But I longed for the moon,
Shifting and alchemical.

They told me I should be the word,
Logic, truth and power.
But I longed for the silence,
Peace without a voice.

So I became the shore.
So I became the dusk.
So I became the breath.

They told me that I should be “he”,
Man up, they said, as if it were a virtue.
But I longed for “she”,
And never knew
Why girl was the worst insult.

And so I might become –
Unfixed, unbounded, unashamed
THEY, whose name is legion,

And in whose heart
The souls of galaxies
Spiral dance
From here to evermore.
